Depending on the circumstances, if the wording and the tone of such a letter are right then the threat of legal action is often enough to settle the dispute and avoid the need for any further litigation. In the UK, a letter before claim must comply with the relevant Pre-Action Protocol of the Civil Procedure Rules, such that it must include (among other things) a summary of the facts, what you want from the party you are claiming from, a list of the key documents you’ll use to support your case and a reasonable deadline for a response (usually 28 days).
